Comeback Quilters Episode #60

We’ve had a rocky start to the year but we’re finally back and ready to podcast!

img_6544

2017 has started off with quite a bang! With two new babies joining the clan and now a new sister-in-law to add to the bunch, we’ve been busy planning showers and weddings and gatherings. Very little quilting has been happening but we’ve managed to sneak a few crafty things in here or there.

I’m participating in Alida’s Growing Up QAL and I’ve finished the first month’s block. I also attempted (poorly I might add) an Instagram fitness and QAL called the Sweat and Sew.

Dori has been cranking out baby blankets left and right to prepare for the new grandbabies about to make their appearances in a few months. Her knitted blanket is done and she’s moved on to a cute whale quilt. Pictures are on Instagram!

We went to our first guild meeting! We got to see a wonderful presentation by Thom Atkins (not Atkinson) and we enjoyed our first meeting so much we’re planning on going to this month’s!

Dori enjoyed her 2nd trip to Road to California, even with it’s bumps and issues. Even with the rain and her cold, she came home with some wonderful items from Carol’s Zoo and Golden Thread Silks.

coffee chat

A few shout outs to our friends around the web.

  • To all those going to Quilt Con this month! We are anxiously awaiting your pictures and posts of your experiences so we can live vicariously through you!
  • Thanks Kati for the book recommendation you left us on Episode #56.
  • Congrats to Francis and all the other quilter’s who have a quilt being displayed in Quilt Con this year!

Make It Meaningful Episode #59

It’s a new year and we have a new podcast episode for you!

img_6544

We like to set out some craft goals for the new year and together we chatted about some favorites from 2016 and what we plan to accomplish in 2017.

This year, like last year, we participated in the Best Of link up over at Meadow Mist Designs. Our top 5 Hobbies Up To Here Posts for 2016 is posted and ready for your viewing pleasure. And congrats to Jake for his Vader quilt taking the top honor!

Our favorites for 2016!

Dori: The Disappearing Pinwheel

PinwheelQuilt-1141

Katie: Christmas Table Runner

img_0810

I’m participating with my friend Alida and her Quilt Along: Growing Up QAL 2017. Hopefully I’ll have more success with this quilt along than I did with the Splendid Sampler. Dori and I both have a long list of projects we’d like to  wrap up this year so definitely check back for our progress!

Both of us highly recommend the Netflix documentary The Minimalist. We’ll be looking at our stashes and our craft rooms to see what we can let go of or what we’d like to use. The plan is not to buy anything new and either use, swap, or donate what we have. Our plan is to make what we have meaningful and useful!

We hope your holidays were wonderful that you have a great beginning to a fresh new year!

#5 Post With The Most Comments

TGIFF: My First Dresden!

Our post with the most comments (21 comments total!) is actually a finished project from 2015 that I didn’t get to post until after the new year. It was the post about my first Dresden and how much I love that little wall hanging. I was very proud of the quilting on it and this year, the moment the season was upon us, I took out that Dresden and hung it in my craft room.

TGIFF: Jake’s Darth Vader Quilt

img_0695

This year the honor of the most viewed post, with 530 total views (WOW!) goes to Jake and his Darth Vader quilt!!!

While the majority of our posts are about our own finishes or what we are working on, Hobbies Up To Here is really a whole family enterprise. My husband and my dad are big supporters and their names and hobbies get mentioned throughout the year. But they aren’t the only ones! Our little man, my 10 year old son, has also shared his hobbies and interests here and there, too. And this year he made his first quilt top, an accomplishment that he is truly proud of. Congrats, my little man!

It’s been an amazing year with a lot of new interests, lots of learning, and the chance to meet, in person, so many of our friends from our on-line quilting community. We hope you enjoyed following along with us this year. We’ve had an awesome time and can’t WAIT to see what 2017 brings us!

Book Review: Birds In The Air Episode #56

Hey hobbyists and crafters. It’s time for another episode of Hobbies Up To Here!

img_6544

We’ve had a very productive week off for Thanksgiving. Here are a few of our WIPS!

My mom and dad have been working on their own stitching projects. She’s flying through a baby blanket and he’s cranking out some great dollies.

I got the wild inspiration to go ahead and create my own design wall. The guys helped me put it all together and now I have one BIG design wall to play with!

img_0678

Jake’s Darth Vader quilt is quilted and now the trimming commences! Jake did the top on his own (with only a little mommy help) and I did the quilting. I’m attempting to roll the binding over as opposed to my usual strip method. Wish me luck!

I also wrapped up my box subscription showdown on our Youtube channel.

This episode we dive into the novel Birds in the Air by Frances O’Roark Dowell. I surprised my mom with a copy for each of us to read and enjoy. And boy did we!

Not only is Frances an author but she is also the host of The Off Kilter Quilt podcast where she talks of life and quilting. Check out her podcast and her website!

If you don’t want to be spoiled, listen through to minute 32 where we take a quick break and then leap into some spoilery goodness.
