Another year, another Top 5 list! We’re about to say goodbye to 2018 and ring in a new year. But that can’t happen until we look back and review what were our most popular posts and projects this past year! So let’s take a look at what we’ve accomplished in 2018!

TGIFF: The Curved Log Cabin

Although this was a 2017 post, this finished quilt remains our most viewed post for 2018 with a total  of  612 views! Having used a Missouri Star Quilt Co pattern and tutorial, my mom gifted this lovely blue and yellow quilt to my sister, Jen. It’s definitely a stunner with the clean white framing and the beautiful blue and yellow flowers. We’d have to say we like this quilt too!

TGIFF: The Beatles Quilt

This post took TWO of our top spots for 2018! And there is no questioning why. This quilt is amazing! From the detailed faces to the stark black and white mixed with the delicate, flowing feather quilting, this quilt is a real eye catcher. It received 16 comments and 10 likes! This quilt went to the OC Fair and made it up on the wall but sadly did not receive any awards due to a technicality. We know, deep in our hearts, that it was a winner, for sure!

Flosstube #1: Introductions

IMG_2883.JPG

This year we ventured into new territory with our multiple hobbies. While we love to quilt, we also love to cross stitch! And through the power of the internet, my mom discovered Flosstube, a whole community of stitchers on Youtube sharing their WIPs and FFOs and hauls. We decided to take the plunge and make our own Youtube series about our stitching projects. Our first video was a hit with over 4,000 views, 194 thumbs up and 108 comments! Since then we’ve published 6 other videos and we’ve had a blast with each one!

QuiltCon 2018 Episode #87

It was another QuiltCon year and another chance for us to meet up with our friends and follow quilters. And boy did we have a blast doing JUST THAT! This was our second year at QuiltCon and so far our best year. We enjoyed every waking moment walking the floors, chatting with friends, filming our experience and even taking a class with Libs Elliot, a favorite designer. This ended up being our most popular podcast episode this year!!

What a year! We’ve had many completed projects finally come off our design walls and we’ve started so many beautiful projects. The friends we’ve met up with this year have kept us motivated and laughing. It’s been a great year for Hobbies Up To Here and we hope make more memories in the new year!

We hope you enjoyed this review of our year and that you take a moment to reflect on what you accomplished! This post is brought to you by Cheryl over at Meadow Mist Designs, a great friend and follow quilter. We had the pleasure of not only joining her the past 3 years but also meeting her in person this year. If you enjoyed this, check out her linkup with other blogs reviewing their best of 2018.

TGIFF: The Beatles Quilt

Each time I’ve completed a quilt, I go through a myriad of feelings.  Joy, excitement, sadness and accomplishment.  All this and soooo much more filled my heart when I put the last stitch in the binding of The Beatles Quilt, a.k.a. “Blackbird”.

It’s taken two years to complete, and it’s been worth every single second!  I wrote about it’s progress in WIP Wednesday: The “Revolution” Beatles Quilt, and Katie and I talked about it on our podcast called Blackbird Quilt Episode #81.   As you might have guessed, this quilt has gone through a few name changes, and though he has settled on “Blackbird”, I’m not writing that title in cement lol!

Though Reg had wanted to hand quilt this piece on his own, he decided to turn it over to the very creative and capable hands of our longarmer, Karen Kimmel of Long Beach, CA. She did an amazing job, and worked hard to translate Reg’s vision into reality. To say she succeeded in spades, is an understatement!  (The video below is Reg’s reaction after getting his quilt back from Karen!)

It still boggles my mind to think that my hubby started with his coveted White Album inspired guitar strap, and ended up with an original, one-of-a-kind quilt!

He started with these images…

…and ended up with THIS!

I’m looking forward to partnering with my husband again on yet another musically inspired quilt. Maybe the Foo Fighters? Jimi Hendricks? How about The Who?!? These and so many more names have been discussed in the past couple of months as “Blackbird” was getting closer to being finished.

I can’t wait!

Hugs,

Dori

Blackbird Quilt Episode #81

Welcome back to Hobbies Up To Here!!
In this episode we sit down and share the life and process of The Beatles quilt! It’s gone by many names (all Beatles titles) and it’s currently being called The Blackbird Quilt. No matter how it has been known, it’s now got a reputation that precedes it. And rightfully so! The quilt is a project thought up by my dad and with the help of my mom and many other friends, has been brought to life!

For more pictures and details on the Blackbird Quilt, make sure to head over to our Instagram page where all of our pictures in progress have been posted!

WIP Wednesday: The “Revolution” Beatles Quilt

To say I’m excited is an understatement.  A few short months ago, I got my sewing machine out of storage after years of nonuse.  Thanks to my daughter Katie, I was inspired to make a QAYG quilt for a friend who’s son was due in a couple of months.  I remember knowing how to turn on my Viking #1+, but even sewing a straight line seemed foreign to me after so long.  I finished the quilt, and yes, caught the bug!

Now, I have a creative space that holds my new Koala sewing table, a crafting table, my mother’s bridal hutch that is bursting with beautiful fabric, my new Baby Lock Aria, and a design wall that has displayed multiple quilts in progress.  Here’s a video of that space from our YouTube channel!

It’s what’s on that design wall that has my heart stopping every time I look at it!

My husband, Reg, is a lifetime Beatles fan.  He has a guitar strap that he loves-it’s the four Beatles individual faces in black and white, taken from an iconic photo from their White Album.  A few weeks ago, he told me he would love to have a quilt made around those images.  That sparked his imagination and mine as well.

IMG_8477

Since then, he’s gone to great lengths to make the design in his head come to fruition.  First he designed 12 blocks with borders and a creative back, on graph paper.  He then contacted Matt, a graphics designer (who’s girlfriend, Cassie, works for us), and had him take the images on the web, and turn then into a B&W file that we could have printed out.  He then had another employee’s (Teri) husband, Mark, print out the images, on both light and heaver weight paper.  Reg used the lighter weight papered images on the light box he made me, to trace each image onto Steam-A-Seam.

After ironing the traced pieces to white Kona, I cut out all the pieces while relaxing with him and binge watching Jessica Jones on Netflix lol!

Using the heaver papered images as a map or template, Reg took all those pieces and adhered them to 16 1/2″ squares of black Kona.  I ironed them, and now they await machine appliquéing with invisible thread!

We have nine more blocks to go through this same process.  Every block is different.  Yay for husband/wife creative team work!

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #22

Hey hobbyists and crafters. Today was a podcast kind of day and BOY were we inspired!

IMG_6544

We originally set out to discuss the topic of organization but as I stepped into the house I felt the need to talk about inspiration and what drives us to create.

Lately, we’ve been been inspired by the music in our lives and it’s showing in our crafts and our quilting.

Check out this rad idea for a Beatles quilt my mom and dad are working on! It was inspired by my dad’s guitar strap.

My grunge days aren’t too far behind me and I’ve been inspired by my past to create a quilt for myself honoring my teen years in plaid and sunflowers.

This little guy has appeared in the bathroom at my mom and dad’s house. He also makes a guest appearance on the podcast today!
