When Good Crafts Go Bad Episode #61

Sometimes crafts go well. And sometimes…sometimes…the crafts go bad!

img_6544

We both had some pretty frustrating moments with some of our hobbies and crafts this week. Between my mom’s fabric just not piecing together properly and my cake falling apart before I could decorate it, we seemed to have the universe against us!

But we’ve learned a lot in all the years of crafting we have behind us. Neither of us gave up but instead worked through the issues and continued to complete our projects.

TGIFF: Easy Peasy Jelly Roll Quilt!

Happy Friday!  I’m finally making a dent in my rather extensive WIP pile of quilts.  I finished my Jelly Roll quilt, and just love the Fall look of the colors.

I used a Moda jelly roll called Sunflower Song by Kansas Troubles Quilters.  I love these fabrics so much, I ordered a second jelly roll to use in a different quilt top!

IMG_5826.jpgThe tutorial I used came from (surprise!) Missouri Star Quilt Company.  Though Jenny Doan says you can complete this quilt top in 45 minutes to an hour, I confess it took me more like three hours.  With practice, I’m sure I can better that time!

Because this was a quick make, I made the choice to quilt it by stitching in the ditch with Isacord (which I LOVE), and instead of hand sewing the binding, I did it all by machine.  I also chose not to include any borders. This is the part of quilting I find so fascinating…the learning curve is HUGE, and finding my personal preferences is constant.  After finishing this quilt, I am convinced that hand binding is my thing.  I really enjoy the process and the look.  Live and learn!

IMG_6289.jpg

I used my binding tool to join the final seam of the binding.  It wasn’t as clean as I would like, so I’m thinking I have a bit more practice ahead of me in order to make my binding smooth and wrinkle free.

Have a wonderful weekend, and remember….be crafty, be creative!

Hugs,

DoriSignature

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #47

img_6544

Hello, hello hobbyists and crafters! It’s time for another podcast episode!

Have you ever realized how easily crafting can become a one-man show? One minute you are starting a project and then within weeks you realize you haven’t really talked to another human being but HEY! You have a finished quilt! Crafting can be a very solitary part of the day and it’s easy to forget to reach out to those with common interest.

Enter guilds and groups! We’ve talked before about our feelings on joining a guild in the area but now we’ve added to our search. Instead of just seeking out quilting guilds, we’ve joined some knitting and crocheting groups through Meetup.com. SO far we’ve joined four groups and we already had our first event with one of them! We’re very excited to add these groups to our web of creators to hang out with and learn from!

We’ve also realized that while we are sewing or crafting, we like to send a little time with other podcasters chatting away while we work on our own. It helps to also feel connected even if it isn’t in person!

Journaling For Me!

Lately I’ve been feeling anti-creative. Making a huge mess and then having to stop and clean up what I’ve started doesn’t appeal to me much these days. It might be that I’ve been working hard in my classroom and I’m too tired to start something big at home.

While I may not have the urge to pull out fabric and get my machine running or to sit there for long stretches and sew, I still have the urge to be creative in other ways.

We’ve lately been on an organizing and cleaning streak, going through all of our closets and drawers, donating things we don’t need that are still in good condition and tossing broken bits. Deep in the darkest corners of my closet I found a bag full of stickers and empty journal pages from a trip my son and I took years ago. Seeing the undone work waiting to be finished, I got the urge to pick up my journal again.

IMG_9550

Journaling for me isn’t just a Dear Diary log of what’s going on and what I’m feeling. Instead it’s a way for me to remember and catalog many of the things that are going on for my future generations to read. It’s a mixture of memories written, pictures shared, and little trinkets of happy instances. Tickets, pictures, clippings, race numbers, and lots of decorative stickers to spruce it up.

There is something very cathartic about writing out your thoughts and what you remember of a certain moment in time. To me, as I watch my grandmother battle Parkinson’s and dementia and memory issues, knowing that I’m writing down my thoughts now before they disappear forever, gives me a sense of calm. I know my son and any generations after will have this log book of all that happened before them so that if I can’t remember, they will still have our history to look back on.

It’s also a great way to clean up! All those loose pictures just laying around from a time when we had pictures printed end up used and stored safely. And instead of all my scrapbooking supplies taking up space, they are put to good use!

To help inspire me to write more often and to keep up my journaling, I’ve created a Pinterest board to collect ideas.

IMG_9471

There are so many resources out there from prompts to graphics that make a journal more than just ink on a page. The ideas take a simple page of thoughts and turn them into interactive memories.

Do you journal and/or scrapbook? Have any favorite layouts you’ve created recently? Feel free to share them!

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #36

Hey hobbyists and crafters! It’s podcast time…

Wait… Isn’t it Thursday?

Yes. Yes it is. And due to Dori’s pending trip to Ireland (lucky ducky) we are podcasting a day early this week.
IMG_6544

Super excited to hear how Dori’s trip goes! She’s already reached out to a few shops in Ireland to visit so I best put in a list of goodies to bring back before she leaves!

newelse11

Don’t forget to say hi to some sheepies!

Today we have NO TOPIC! So it’s just a sit and chat kind of day. Also included is a small segment from my little man talking about some of his crafty creations, including paracording!

While I may not be sewing or quilting much, I am taking some time to organize my crafty items and do a little journaling/scrapbooking with whatever I find.

DIY Glass Bulb Ornamnets

Something is in the air this holiday season and it’s not just the flu bug (cough, cough sniff, sniff).

Dori has been crafting away and making a lot of her own Christmas decorations this year. She’s even gone so far as to repurpose some of her holiday items in new and exciting ways. Along with her usual decorations, she’s added some bulbs that have been personalized.

Taking clear glass bulbs and filling with a pearlized paint began the process. Her goal was to make a little snowman for the tree with a sock cap on top!

It all started out wonderfully, filling the bulb and even painting a face on the little snowman.

We mixed and played with paints to get the right color orange for his cute little nose.

So far so good!

There goes the nose!

Adorable, no?

What we didn’t take into consideration is that the paint would need to rest so that it would dry completely and stick to the inside of the globe. Once we hung him up, looking dapper and adorable, we noticed some streaks inside the bulb forming.

Now a week later and this little guy is clear again with a puddle of paint at the bottom. Oops! Well, we’ve learned what NOT to do and hopefully our next attempt will work out better. We’ll let the bulb dry upside down, draining the excess paint and waiting to add the detail until it is completely dry inside so that we won’t lose the painted coat inside.

The next DIY bulb ornament  project involved my son. He got to make his own bulb for the tree. It’s filled with little fuzzy balls and bells all in the holiday colors.

While he watched football with Papa he stuffed the fuzz balls into his bulb and later added some bells. The colors and types were all his own decision so this ornament is very personal to him.

Then we added some ribbon  and closed it up. It’s now ready to be personalized.

My mom is great at adding well printed and decorative writing to round ornaments. She did this for family and friends and even as a job during the holidays when we were younger. I hope to soon sit down with her and create a tutorial for anyone interested in seeing more on her techniques and tips.
