A Week of Pinterest: Pass or Fail!

This week was our Spring Break from school and work and we decided to stay home instead of travel. While I would have all this time at home, I realized it would be a great time to get creative!

So I scanned my Pinterest boards and found  few things I wanted to try and share the process with all of you! Below are my five days of testing our Pinterest projects, from makeup to DIY art.

Monday

I’m a huge fan of makeup because I love playing with colors and creating new looks. It’s amazing what you can do with a little eyeshadow and some brushes. To me it’s similar to painting a canvas, except that it’s your face. I attempted a smokey eye look and shared my thoughts.

Tuesday

The next day I chose a DIY art project that I’ve seen float through my pins from day one on Pinterest. Melted crayon art looks so cool and yet could go so horribly wrong so I wanted to take a stab at it and see if I could create something beautiful.

Wednesday

One of the biggest boards I have on Pinterest is my cooking board. There I pin all the yummy recipes I want to make and some of them I do attempt. But I hadn’t yet made a fried recipe so I pulled one of the most repinned chicken dishes on my board.

Thursday

With three passes under our belt, my son and I attempted another DIY art project that I had seen many times on Pinterest. Around Christmas time we had actually thought to try these as gifts. BOY am I glad we didn’t do that. These were not quite a pass or fail but they definitely didn’t come out as we had hoped.

Friday

On our final day I really wanted to make some cool bath bombs so that we could relax in the bath with some soothing peppermint scented fizziness. Sadly I think I messed these up so I may attempt them again when summer comes and I have some more free time on my hands.

Our five days are up and I’m thrilled to say we had three passes and only two fails. And the two fails are something I’m interested in going back and trying again. It was also a great bonding experience for Jake and myself. We had fun making the videos and also discussing what worked and what didn’t. I think we’d be up for trying more Pinterests projects this summer!

DIY Steampunk Kid Costume

Every Halloween, we get creative. And not just Halloween, but it’s something about Fall in general. I love the colors, the feel of the season, and it gets my DIY craftiness going.

Because Halloween is all about becoming something you are not everyday, my son and I have always made our costumes as much as possible. And this year was no different! He wanted to dress up in the Steampunk style (thanks to the TV show Steampunk’d).

With his style in mind and a few ideas on what pieces we’d need, we headed over to Pinterest to gather some ideas and plans to bring his look together. He found one picture that turned in his main inspiration.

Then we took off to Good Will.

There we hit a home run with a $0.99 vest, a top hat, and even some goggles. We filled in the other pieces with things we had around the house. His black pants, white shirt and boots were all clothing items we already had. Then we took an old Nerf gun and some other toys that we would antique for a more steampunk look.

It turned out to be quite the undertaking. You have to lay down a good base before using the Rub and Buff wax to get that antique look. I sprayed a matte black coat on a sanded down Nerf gun and a little plastic squirt toy for his hand. Waiting for everything to dry probably was the lengthiest part to the whole process.

While I waited, I began the task of Gorilla glueing all of the cogs and chains to his Good Will top hat.

Then we waxed and buffed all of the antiquing colors onto his weapons. We used Rub and Buff in different tones and while it made it easy to change the obnoxious orange and yellow of the Nerf gun to a great antiqued weapon, I didn’t quite do it as instructed. I painted it on instead of rubbing and it just took longer than expected. I still think it’s a great product.

In the end Jake LOVED his costume and the overall look. Below are the final results (except for the trench coat he added when it got cooler).

We love to DIY and we love the Steampunk style. Pulling them both together made a great costume that got lots of compliments.

DIY Fall Gift Baskets

My mother-in-law recently asked for some help to create some spa-day gift baskets for a few captains that have been organizing a retreat for the past year. It was her way of saying “Thank You” for all their hard work.

She wanted some input after seeing my YouTube videos last year when I hauled a bunch of cool crafting items from my local Dollar Tree and used them to create lots of adorable fall decorations and later on, some great gift ideas for under $10, all from the Dollar Tree.

img_0441

Even Jake enjoys them!

Also, I’ve most recently been gushing out my local Daiso store where you can get a lot of unique Japanese items for $3.00 or less. I’ve enjoyed a lot of their sheet masks for my face.

So together we hit up the Dollar Tree first and I just about died at all the beautiful fall decor and crafts! I love the deep colors and all the leaves and sparkle.
img_0498

For my mother-in-law’s project, I was surprised to find that the Dollar Tree also carried shrink wrap gift bags. I’ve used this stuff before but not from here so I took a chance and we brought home a few to try.

We combined a mixture of bath and spa items from both stores including bath gel, lotion, rose sponges, bath salts, relaxation masks, hand sanitizers, and a sheet mask or two.

She already had these adorable baskets with little felt pumpkins and leaves. Very cute and fall feeling for a great base to our gift baskets.

We also picked up some packets of fabric leaves. They had everything from solid fall colors to gold or sparkling leaves, too. So many great little pieces to add some dimension to the baskets.

Filling the baskets was fun but the real challenge came when we had to use the shrink wrap. Now my previous experience is that shrink wrap can be finicky. Sometimes it works, sometimes it folds and creases, even rips.

But I was happily surprised by the outcome! Once I got the hang of it, I found each gift coming together quicker and smoother than the last. The trick seemed to be working from the bottom up. Heating the bottom, then around to the sides, and up made the process simple. We just used a plain hairdryer and then trimmed the tops after wrapping a beautiful bow to synch it shut.

In the end we made 8 gift baskets and used up all the spa and bath items. We had a few packets of leaves left over so I took them home to make something with them.

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #47

img_6544

Hello, hello hobbyists and crafters! It’s time for another podcast episode!

Have you ever realized how easily crafting can become a one-man show? One minute you are starting a project and then within weeks you realize you haven’t really talked to another human being but HEY! You have a finished quilt! Crafting can be a very solitary part of the day and it’s easy to forget to reach out to those with common interest.

Enter guilds and groups! We’ve talked before about our feelings on joining a guild in the area but now we’ve added to our search. Instead of just seeking out quilting guilds, we’ve joined some knitting and crocheting groups through Meetup.com. SO far we’ve joined four groups and we already had our first event with one of them! We’re very excited to add these groups to our web of creators to hang out with and learn from!

We’ve also realized that while we are sewing or crafting, we like to send a little time with other podcasters chatting away while we work on our own. It helps to also feel connected even if it isn’t in person!

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #45

Crossing fingers there are no technical issues this week, here is episode #45!!!

IMG_6544

Jake and I recently shared a new DIY project we attempted at home with some old crayons. So far, we’ve had some major success!

Have you ever had an Ah-Ha moment?
Those moments when something clicks and inspires you?
This week we share some of our recent ah-ha moments that got us going creatively!

Dori’s doll making interest has been sparked again! This time with soft dolls. And a recent ah-ha moment has her inspired and seeing doll making in a whole new way!

Angela Walters and Christa Watson shared a shirt design on Instagram with the slogan “Finished is better than Perfect” and this really stuck with me. So much so I’ve jumped back on my machine and I’m working on a few projects at the same time without the worry about it being perfect.

Quilt & Coffee Chat

For our quilt and coffee chat this week, we shout out to a few friends, fellow crafters, and followers who have reached out and made our day a little brighter with some kind words of encouragement.

  • I recently had the pleasure of some back and forth with Pat Sloan on a YouTube video of mine. We chatted a bit about The Splendid Sampler and about the flexibility of the sampler.
  • Our sweet follower Sandy has been catching up on some past podcast episodes and we wanted to give her a shout out and a thank you for the uplifting and positive encouragement!
  • Also to Claudette, a YouTube subscriber that has been very supportive of our YouTube adventures. She’s been watching for a while and leaves comments of the most wonderful and positive words. Thank you!!
  • If you caught my Instagram post the other day of a new show that I found on TV called Craft Wars, then you’ll want to check out this YouTube Channel for this awesome, FUN show (if you can get past Tori Spelling as the hostess). It’s pretty inspiring and lots of creative fun.
  • I also received some happy mail and I really enjoyed the goodies in this Stash Builder Box!

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #35

Hey Hobbyist and Crafters, it’s a special day today! Not only is it our podcast day but it’s our anniversary!!!

Happy 1st year Hobbies Up To Here!!
Check out our first podcast episode for old time’s sake!
Episode One

IMG_6544

On today’s podcast we list our top 5 projects that are the most memorable over the last year. It’s never easy to pick your favorite quilt or craft but we made the tough choices and are excited to share them with you!

Katie’s Top Five Favorites

  • My 4th of July table runner was my first quilted project that really came together beautifully. I loved everything about it!

4thQuilt

  • Another finished runner, our Halloween runners, came out so different yet so great. We love them both!

IMG_8073

  • It seems any time I tried something new, I loved the outcome. My Christmas Dresden hanging came out beautifully and I would love to have it out all year long!

img_8664

  • The holidays really lit a creative fire and I couldn’t put it out. Along with my quilting projects, another holiday favorite was my Christmas wreath.

Katie’s Honorable Mention

During podcast episode 4, my mom surprised me with a new sewing machine. My Elna, aka Rosy, has become my best friend. I’m so thankful for the gift and so grateful for the opportunity to work with it!

IMG_6908

Dori’s Top Five Favorites

  • Dori’s first favorite memory recalls her first finish! Mike’s birthday quilt, the Music Quilt, was a grand undertaking and it came out beautifully!

IMG_5190

img_5718

  • She also did a beautiful Dresden plate for a baby quilt that came out so incredible. It really showed how much she’s grown and how far her quilting has come.

EverleighQ1

  • She also attempted some “3D sewing” and made a purse for my sister’s birthday. While the pattern was not as clear as she would like, it still looks amazing.

IMG_5759

  • And Dori’s last favorite is her current in-progress project, paper piecing. Having gone from not knowing that paper piecing existing to this beautiful outcome is saying a lot about her talent!

img_9360

Dori’s Honorable Mention

It can be easy to forget where you started but Dori’s honorable mention is just that, her first official finished quilt from this past year. Her first baby quilt was not only her first in decades but her first quilt-as-you-go!

A Last Honorable Mention (Or Two!)

QuiltCon was an amazing experience! Check out my mom’s thoughts on meeting Mary Fons and Jenny Doan, our live podcast episode while we were there, our wrap-up podcast after we returned, and our YouTube video to share our thoughts.

The So Cal Quilter’s Run happens every June and local quilt shops participate in a themed shop-hop that runs two weekends in June. We went last year and had a blast and we plan to go again this year. Hopefully we’ll get to hang out again with our friend Melanie at Thousand Needles and maybe even visit a few shops together!

We have some exciting goals we want to work towards this coming year so make sure to subscribe to us wherever you can and return as often as possible to keep up with all of our crafty endeavors. And THANK YOU THANK YOU to all our listeners. Without you, we’d just be two crazy ladies sitting around, talking about our hobbies!

Crafty Gooooodness Shopping Spree!

Oh dear…with my 37th anniversary coming up tomorrow, my hubby’s birthday on the 13th and Valentine’s Day on the 14th, I thought it would be nice to hand make cards for each celebration.  The supplies I have on hand are wonderful for Christmas cards, but wouldn’t suit any of the other celebrations.  So it was off to Michael’s to “grab a few things” I had on a list I made from searching Pinterest and watching YouTube vids over breakfast.

Sheesh, I think I owe Tim Holtz my firstborn.  (Sorry Kate!) Going to one Michael’s wasn’t enough…I hit TWO!  I’m finally home and have spread out my booty…..

Uh, yeah.

Now to create a card for tomorrow.  This is gonna be FUN!!!  Whether I use my new stamp sets, my Sizzix die cuts with my Big Shot or pre-made stickers and embellishments, I know he’ll appreciate whatever it is that I present to him.

Oh!  Don’t forget to check out our QuiltCon post too.  Just push PLAY!  Or rather, click on this link lol!

Have a great evening, and I’d love to hear about your adventures in card making!
