It’s time for the annual quilt shop hop here around Southern California! We’re excited that this year my dad is on board and ready to run with us. He’s got it all planned out already!
We’re also planning on a meet and greet at one of our local shops to meet with other So Cal quilters that are also listeners of the podcast. We’re aiming for a meeting at the Orange Quilt Bee but don’t have a set day and time yet. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for an event notification soon!
Dori is thinking of heading to a local retreat in October up to Big Bear. I may not be a member but I may just drive up and crash with the quilters for a day!
Have yet to make it to Road to California but Dori has gone twice in and lived to tell about it! We’re aiming to go in 2018 together this time and maybe even sign up for a class or two. Pubic registration opens July 8th!
QuiltCon is coming back to Pasadena and we’re excited to sign up for classes and lectures! We really enjoyed our first trip in 2016 and we’re looking forward to experiencing the joy and creativity all over again! Public registration opens July 8th!
We have so much to share this week! We are all done with our So Cal Quilter’s Run 2016 and there are lots of great little shops we want to share with you!
If you’d like to follow along with this podcast, feel free to check out the pictures that we are talking about on our Instagram feed. Scroll back to our first quilt shop, Quilter’s Cocoon, and play along as we reminisce about our 2016 run!
Below are photos that didn’t make it to Instagram but that we still wanted to share. Enjoy!
Apart of the run as to collect these laser cut letter and possibly make a quilt top out of them. But playing the game means you get randomized letters. The likelihood of getting a word randomly was a small so seeing these cute cubed pillows as an option for your letters was an inspiration.
The lovely staff at the Tops & Bobbins Quilt Shopped played up their Operation theme and dressed in scrubbed. And behind our helper here is an example of a quilt top made with the letter to look like a game of Scrabble.
In El Cajon we were treated to a game of Battleship! The ladies here was very kind and lots of fun. They were all dressed in a navel 1940’s theme including Rosy the Riveter.
While at the Quilt In A Day shop we got to peek inside one of Eleanor Burns’ studios. It was fascinating to see how it is set up especially in the lighting department. As an amateur Youtube video creator, I’m always on the hunt for new ways to make our videos better.
And while at this stop my number was called and I got to spin the wheel where I won 25% any item in the store. Of course I put that to good use and bought myself the Cotton + Steel fat quarter box set!
At our next stop Dori won a raffle, too! When her number was called during BINGO she received a free pattern! And during this stop she picked up some lovely fabrics in a beautiful far quarter bundle along with some mini quilt patterns.
We can only describe our last stop as unique, whimsical, and even magical. They carried lots of interesting and fantastical fabrics as seen in this dragon quilt here. I knew my boys would get a kick out of this piece so I snapped a shot and sent it to them!
Well hobbyists and crafters, another year, another run is done. We’ve had a blast and traveled up and down the roads of southern California through traffic and heatwaves and ill children. But all the while enjoying every minute!
This special edition of our podcast is to share with all of our local listeners the schedule we have created for this wonderful time of year.
If you aren’t local, let me share with you what we’re planning for the next two weeks. Starting June 16th, 21 local So Cal quilt shops are opening up for a special shop hop event. Every year they pick and theme and every shop decorates accordingly. You got a booklet and a space for every shop so the you can collect stamps/stickers for each visit.
There are prizes, free game pieces, and lots of great people to meet and greet.
We’re looking forward to it!!!
So far we have a plan to hit most of the shops (even though we both secretly hope to hit them all and enter the drawing for the Grand Prize!)
While we have great intention to hit every shop on the list, we know that life may get in the way so our schedule is subject to change. The shops are listed by their numbers on the map and we will be visiting them from top to bottom of each list.
We’re starting on our home turf the first day and plan to cover all of Area 2 by Thursday.
4. The Sew N Sew
3. The Quilt Cupboard
1. Orange Quilt Bee
Our second day will included a nice LONG trip out to Lancaster to cover all of Area 1!
1. Bolts in the Bathtub
6. The Quilter’s Studio
2. Cotton & Chocolate Quilt Company
4. Quilt Emporium
5. Quilt ‘n’ Things
3. New Moon Textiles
June 23-June 24
Possibly Area 3
Our schedule gets a little iffy due to my hosting responsibilities. If I no longer have a guest at my house, we’ll definitely hit the two closer shops in Area 3 and leave the 3 furthest for another day.
5. Tops & Bobbins
1. Busy Bee Quilt Shop
This day is also up in the air. Until we know what days I’m hosting our international friend, I may not be available. But, if I am, we plan to spend the day traveling to the most southern area on our dance card, Area 4!
1. Cozy Creative Center
4. Memory Lane Quilt Shop
6. Quilt in a Day
2. Fat Quarters Quilt Shop
3. Inspirations Quilt Shop
5. Quilter’s Cottage
If we feel up to it then we’ll head back out to Area 3 June 26th to go to the other shops that we missed. But as we know, everything is flexible so we’ll do what we can!
We hope you enjoy the podcast today and if you are hopping around the shops of So Cal, we hope to see you around!

A good number!
Christa Watson at Christa Quilts shared on her Instagram account that she likes to batch her process. Make a bunch of tops, then baste them all at the same time, and after move on to quilting.
This sparked a conversation between Dori and I about what our preferred process is. And we decided to include our friends and followers in this conversation through Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. We got a lot of great info and we highly recommend that you head over to our pages to see what’s been happening.
