A Week of Pinterest: Pass or Fail!

This week was our Spring Break from school and work and we decided to stay home instead of travel. While I would have all this time at home, I realized it would be a great time to get creative!

So I scanned my Pinterest boards and found  few things I wanted to try and share the process with all of you! Below are my five days of testing our Pinterest projects, from makeup to DIY art.

Monday

I’m a huge fan of makeup because I love playing with colors and creating new looks. It’s amazing what you can do with a little eyeshadow and some brushes. To me it’s similar to painting a canvas, except that it’s your face. I attempted a smokey eye look and shared my thoughts.

Tuesday

The next day I chose a DIY art project that I’ve seen float through my pins from day one on Pinterest. Melted crayon art looks so cool and yet could go so horribly wrong so I wanted to take a stab at it and see if I could create something beautiful.

Wednesday

One of the biggest boards I have on Pinterest is my cooking board. There I pin all the yummy recipes I want to make and some of them I do attempt. But I hadn’t yet made a fried recipe so I pulled one of the most repinned chicken dishes on my board.

Thursday

With three passes under our belt, my son and I attempted another DIY art project that I had seen many times on Pinterest. Around Christmas time we had actually thought to try these as gifts. BOY am I glad we didn’t do that. These were not quite a pass or fail but they definitely didn’t come out as we had hoped.

Friday

On our final day I really wanted to make some cool bath bombs so that we could relax in the bath with some soothing peppermint scented fizziness. Sadly I think I messed these up so I may attempt them again when summer comes and I have some more free time on my hands.

Our five days are up and I’m thrilled to say we had three passes and only two fails. And the two fails are something I’m interested in going back and trying again. It was also a great bonding experience for Jake and myself. We had fun making the videos and also discussing what worked and what didn’t. I think we’d be up for trying more Pinterests projects this summer!

Shower Thoughts Episode #64

What is it about the warmth of a comforting shower that brings up the most ingenious thoughts and plans? And of course it happens when you are all wet and unable to stop to write down all the great ideas you come up with!

img_6544

Today’s music is brought to you by Reg (AKA Dad). The song was originally written as a lullaby for Jake and all the future grandbabies. Here’s to Jake, our big 11 year old, and our new little Logan.

We were surprised by a call from my sister announcing that Logan was on his way! He decided to come a little earlier than expected and he’s just perfect! Welcome, little man!

Papa and his newest little man.

This month we are playing along with the March A Long 2017 hosted by the Scientific Quilter.  The goal is to sew/quilt/stitch/press/organize or anything in the realm of sewing for 15 minutes a day for the month of March.

It’s the beginning of the month so we set some goals. Dori is going to work on her curved log cabin. I’m going to continue with my blocks for the puzzle box quilt.

We share our shower thoughts for our YouTube channel. There is a plan to attempt some Pinterest crafts like this crayon melt art and record whether they are a pass or a fail.

Another idea is to continue with the box openings but to expand beyond quilting and sewing. I’m looking into some yarn and art boxes to try out along with including my husband in some geeky unboxings. Keep an eye out for our future video ideas.

Dori had a huge success with an instant pot recipe. They tried a Mongolian Beef dinner that was tasty and enjoyable!

Check out the #IGQuiltFest on Instagram. We’re having a blast hopping around and meeting new quilty friends!

Thanks to our listeners and followers for your subscriptions and your friendship. We really appreciate you all.

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #45

Crossing fingers there are no technical issues this week, here is episode #45!!!

IMG_6544

Jake and I recently shared a new DIY project we attempted at home with some old crayons. So far, we’ve had some major success!

Have you ever had an Ah-Ha moment?
Those moments when something clicks and inspires you?
This week we share some of our recent ah-ha moments that got us going creatively!

Dori’s doll making interest has been sparked again! This time with soft dolls. And a recent ah-ha moment has her inspired and seeing doll making in a whole new way!

Angela Walters and Christa Watson shared a shirt design on Instagram with the slogan “Finished is better than Perfect” and this really stuck with me. So much so I’ve jumped back on my machine and I’m working on a few projects at the same time without the worry about it being perfect.

Quilt & Coffee Chat

For our quilt and coffee chat this week, we shout out to a few friends, fellow crafters, and followers who have reached out and made our day a little brighter with some kind words of encouragement.

  • I recently had the pleasure of some back and forth with Pat Sloan on a YouTube video of mine. We chatted a bit about The Splendid Sampler and about the flexibility of the sampler.
  • Our sweet follower Sandy has been catching up on some past podcast episodes and we wanted to give her a shout out and a thank you for the uplifting and positive encouragement!
  • Also to Claudette, a YouTube subscriber that has been very supportive of our YouTube adventures. She’s been watching for a while and leaves comments of the most wonderful and positive words. Thank you!!
  • If you caught my Instagram post the other day of a new show that I found on TV called Craft Wars, then you’ll want to check out this YouTube Channel for this awesome, FUN show (if you can get past Tori Spelling as the hostess). It’s pretty inspiring and lots of creative fun.
  • I also received some happy mail and I really enjoyed the goodies in this Stash Builder Box!

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #39

Hey hobbyists and crafters! It’s podcast day, once again!

IMG_6544

Today’s podcast is full of goodies. We talk about splurging and saving on all of our crafty items. What items or brands are worth paying full price for? And what items are most likely bought on sale?

First we talk about thread choice. Based on our quilter’s question on Instagram, our blog, and our Facebook page most of our friends and followers use Aurifil thread. Thread is one of those things I always went cheap on until I learned the ways of other, more experienced quilters. Now I put time and effort into researching my thread choices.

We both agree that needles are a notion that we save on and we don’t seek out more costly options but we definitely splurge on fabric!

Feel free to comment and share your thoughts.
What do you splurge on? Where do you save?

Quilt & Coffee Chat

Our coffee and chat shout out goes to Keeping u in Stitches Quilting where they share lots of quilting places and tutorials from around the web. They recently shared our Top 5 Quilter’s Tools video and it helped us reach over 1000 views!

Thanks for sharing our video!

Hobbies Up To Here Episode #29

Social media. It’s everywhere and it can be hard to get away from it.

Today we chatted about the good, the bad, and the ugly of the web when it comes to crafting and hobbies. What sites do you use? Which do you stay away from? Are there any you’ve wanted to check out but haven’t yet?

Be sure to listen in and see what sites and apps we use to keep up our creative juices flowin’!

IMG_6544

And even with all our talking, we still missed a big one, Periscope! Periscope is relatively new to use and we scope using my account while my mom is still a viewer and supporter. But it’s one we love and continue to use today!

Dori got a real kick when a picture of her Gear Quilt was reposted by Rob Appell of ManSewing. We love that the internet can, at times, make the world a level playing field where everyone can reach a little bit of fame if they so choose to chase it!

Speaking of social media, come find us, follow us, or like us around the web!!

{VIDEO} Simple Bow Making Tutorial

Recently, I hit up the Dollar Tree store near me and bought a bunch of holiday ribbon so I could make my simple bows for gifts and decorations. You don’t need much to make them, just some wire edged ribbon, scissors, thread and/or floral wire. I used some wire ties I had saved up.

The steps are easy to follow and once you give this method a try, you’ll be making bows with ease!

{VIDEO} DIY Mod Podge Glitter Jar

When I’m not quilting or sewing, I’ve always got a new project on my mind. I love trying out new ways to take everyday items and make them into something beautiful and useful.

Hence my addiction to mod podge. I’ve not had much luck with mod podge so far BUT I’m determined to make it mine!

This weekend I had some success and created some great little jars for decorating your home either for the holidays or just to add a little glitz around your home.

Check out our little tutorial to make your own mod podge glitter jar!

{VIDEO} How To Beat That Creative Funk

It never fails. Life gets busy. Things get in the way. You unexpectedly find yourself unable to summon the energy to make a mess and get crafty. Well, what do you do?

I’ve recently found myself in a creative funk. For all the reasons listed above, I couldn’t find it in me to do any of the crafts that I loved. After a week of hemming and hawing around, I decided to make a list of ways to break through my creative funk.

I felt so much better having complied a list of ways to work through my issues that I thought I’d share them. Enjoy the video below and share in the comments anything you have found that works for you!
